Salam Benua

Summer break is coming...for those who need visa before travel (India, USA, Canada etc.), this poem is for you to think about.

Salam Benua oleh Usman Awang

I

MEREKA memisahkan kita
pasport visa wilayah segala tembok nama
mereka merompak kita dengan undang-undangnya
peluru dikirimkan dalam bungkusan dollarnya
kita dipaksa memilih salah satu
dan kita mesti memilihnya
tiada jalan lain

II

Telah saudara pilih senapang dan peluru
banyak pemimpin memilih dollarnya
untuk ini saudara membasahi baju
rumput-merah sungai-merah
tangis anak-anak
darah rakyat tertindas

III

Saudara memerah kaktus melumat batu
menjadikannya minuman makanan
gadis-gadis bekerja debu pasir dandanannya
anak-anak kecil menyandang senapang
saudara menghitamkan langit menyelubungi
saluran minyak
setengahnya menyanyi di penjara
untuk pembebasan Palestin

IV

Kami bertatih di sawah semakin kering
petani-petani mulai menebang hutan dara
permulaan kecil pada ketenangan segumpul awam
ketenangan yang di belakangnya memangkas kami
yang sedikit ini sedang belajar
dari tiap pengalaman saudara
dan pengalaman sendiri
kami memampatkan gerhana bulan mei
pada tujuan tempat
nusantara ini

V

Salam
tanpa visa
pasport
golf
warna
kemanusiaan rakyat
seluruh benua

English Translation:

Greetings to the Continent

I

THEY separate us
the passports visas frontiers all names for barriers
they rob us with their laws
sending bullets wrapped in dollars
forcing us to choose
and choose we must
there is no other way

II

Friend, you have chosen guns and bullets
many leaders prefer their dollars
for this you must soak your clothes
red grass, red river
children’s weeping
the blood of the exploited

III

You squeeze cactus and grind stones
to make food and drink
girls toil decorated in dust
little children sling on their weapons
you darken the sky with exploding pipelines
others sing in prisons
for the freedom of Palestine

IV

We strive in drying rice fields
daring peasants have begun to clear the virgin jungle
small beginnings in a cloudlike calmness
a calmness that nips us in the bud
we the few are still learning
from all your experiences,
and our own

we shall consolidate the May eclipse
at the true target
of this archipelago

V

Greetings
without visa
passport
golf
colour
to humanity, people,
of all continents.

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Kind

This is my plan for summer 2010. Hopefully my plan will be bless by Allah and the best for me. I am very nervous to buy this flight ticket until i cant sleep all the night. Allah, i make a plan. And You also have plan for me. And You are the best planner.

Land of Anbiya. Land of Imam al Banna. The location of Al Azhar. Hope those landmarks give the clues why i choose Egypt for my summer trips.

Also have attention to do Umrah. May Allah give me the opportunity.

To those my friends who going back to Malaysia, please bring some ketupat rendang to UK on September ok.

And not to forget, to those my friends yang stay in UK, datang la Egypt. Let ride camel together!
